Motorists travelling on the M27 in Hampshire are being warned to expect delays and disruption as essential bridge refurbishment works continue, with an overnight eastbound closure scheduled between Junction 1 and Junction 2.

According to National Highways, the M27 eastbound carriageway between Junction 1 and Junction 2 is due to close from 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, until 6 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23. The closure is part of ongoing work at Salisbury Road Bridge near the Ower Interchange.

M27 Road Closure Today

The Salisbury Road Bridge refurbishment project began on September 13 and is expected to continue until October 24. The work includes replacing bridge deck joints, waterproofing and resurfacing the bridge, alongside repairs to concrete and bridge bearings.

National Highways has warned that additional overnight closures and restrictions are expected while the project progresses. Following the scheduled closures, overnight lane restrictions are expected to remain between Junction 1 and Junction 2 into late October.

Drivers using the route are being encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys, particularly during the overnight closure periods.

Previous M27 Accident Near Portchester

The roadworks come shortly after a reported overturned-vehicle incident on the M27 near Portchester on Monday, September 21.

The incident was reported on the eastbound carriageway between Junction 11 and Junction 12, where traffic was temporarily held while vehicles were dealt with. Reports indicated that congestion extended for several miles before traffic was eventually released onto the hard shoulder.

However, the Portchester incident occurred on September 21, and there is currently no reliable official confirmation of a separate major accident on the M27 on September 22.
