One person was killed Monday morning after Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies opened fire during an encounter at a gas station in Claremont, California, prompting a major law-enforcement response near South Indian Hill Boulevard.

The shooting occurred at approximately 9:38–9:40 a.m. September 21 at the Chevron gas station and McDonald’s at 860 South Indian Hill Boulevard, near American Avenue and the 10 Freeway. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a deputy-involved shooting occurred at the location.

According to ABC7’s reporting, the incident began during a theft investigation at the gas station. Authorities said the suspect was armed with a knife and was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies during the encounter.

The person who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were reported injured.

Claremont Deputy-Involved Shooting Investigation

The shooting brought Claremont police, Los Angeles County sheriff’s personnel and Los Angeles County Fire Department crews to the busy commercial area. Fire officials confirmed that personnel responded to assist with a person suffering from a gunshot wound, but no one was transported to a hospital from the scene.

A knife was visible near the deceased person following the shooting, and later reporting identified the individual as a suspect allegedly armed with a large knife.

The incident temporarily affected traffic and businesses in the surrounding area. Streets near American Avenue and the Indian Hill Boulevard 10 Freeway exit, as well as San Bernardino Avenue in nearby Pomona, were closed while authorities investigated the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire shortly before deputies were observed at the location. A security officer who spoke with the Claremont Courier said he heard the shots and subsequently saw two sheriff’s deputies near the person on the ground.
