Two separate fatal crashes on the 60 Freeway in the Chino area caused significant traffic disruption during Monday morning’s commute, with both collisions occurring on the westbound side of the freeway within approximately a mile of each other.

The back-to-back crashes prompted emergency responses, lane closures and lengthy delays for motorists traveling through the Inland Empire.

First Fatal Crash Near Mountain Avenue

The first collision was reported shortly before 6 a.m. near the Mountain Avenue exit, according to preliminary information from the California Highway Patrol.

The crash involved a motorcycle, with the rider found in the freeway lanes. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and a coroner was requested after the motorcyclist was reported to have died.

Authorities had not immediately released the identity of the rider or provided a complete explanation of what led to the collision.

Second Fatal Crash Near Central Avenue

A second fatal collision was reported at approximately 6:36 a.m., west of Central Avenue and roughly a mile from the earlier crash.

Preliminary information indicated that a semi-truck collided with a Lexus before traveling up an embankment. At least one person was transported to a hospital for treatment and later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities had not immediately established which vehicle the victim was traveling in, and the person’s identity had not been publicly released.

The circumstances surrounding the second collision remain under investigation.

Major 60 Freeway Traffic Delays

The two fatal crashes occurred during the busy Monday morning commute, creating major problems for westbound traffic.

Several lanes were closed while CHP investigators and emergency crews worked at the separate crash scenes. Traffic backed up for several miles, with congestion reportedly extending toward the 15 Freeway by approximately 9 a.m.

Drivers were advised to avoid the affected section of the 60 Freeway when possible and consider alternate routes while emergency crews remained at the scenes.

Westbound Lanes Reopen

Caltrans later reported that the affected westbound lanes had reopened at approximately 11:08 a.m. Monday, after investigators completed their initial work and crews removed vehicles and other hazards associated with the crashes.

Although the lanes reopened, motorists could still experience residual delays as traffic volumes returned to normal following the earlier closures.

Investigation Into Both Fatal Crashes Continues

Authorities continue to investigate both collisions. At the time of the latest reports, officials had not released the names of the people who died or provided a complete account of the circumstances that led to either crash.

Investigators are expected to examine the vehicles involved, roadway conditions and other available evidence as they work to determine what happened.
